CNES said it began ground qualification testing for the Callisto demonstrator at the Guiana Space Centre on Oct. 29, 2026.
The French space agency disclosed the location in the same announcement. A full-scale Callisto mockup stands at the center’s former Diamant launch facility, which CNES is redeveloping for the program. French company CIPAL built the mockup. CNES said it will validate ground systems and interfaces with ground infrastructure rather than serve as a flight vehicle.
CNES said teams were running a week-long campaign on Oct. 30, 2026, to test launch-base and vehicle communications. The agency said the campaign aims to ensure reliable communications during take-off and during the vehicle’s descent. The test campaign focuses on the communications link between the launch base and the demonstrator.
DLR said on Aug. 3, 2026, that it expects Callisto’s inaugural flight in 2027. CNES said ground testing will continue into 2027 ahead of the flight vehicle’s arrival, though the agency did not explicitly corroborate the flight date in its Oct. 29, 2026, announcement.
