Satnews.com reported Oct. 25, 2026 that U.S. Space Command told New Zealand’s military to withhold operational details of the Auckland hub at Royal New Zealand Air Force Base in Auckland.
Satnews.com said the defense force turned down an Official Information Act request on the hub’s direct support for international combat operations, citing direction from American military authorities. Wellington defense officials say New Zealand retains ultimate control of the Auckland site, while the military must get American approval before releasing mission logs.
Satnews.com said Auckland’s facility serves as the regional coordination point for the Pacific arm of the Pentagon-funded Joint Commercial Operations network. Earlier official announcements confirmed that the hub watched Chinese military satellite launches and an Iranian civilian payload launched into orbit by Russia. New Zealand joined Operation Olympic Defender alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia to deter hostility in orbit.
Satnews.com quoted Barbara Golf, a U.S. Space Force strategic advisor for space domain awareness, the tracking of objects and activity in orbit, as calling the Joint Commercial Operations network an extremely fast expansion. She said the system spots localized radio-frequency interference and hostile jammers. She made the remarks as U.S. Space Command speeds up commercial telemetry use across the global combatant commands.
