Northwestern University physicists confined a single positron, the antimatter counterpart of an electron, in a cryogenic vacuum trap for months. The confinement permitted the first precision quantum measurements on an isolated antimatter particle. The research was reported Oct. 21, 2026.
Gerald Gabrielse, a Northwestern physicist and the paper’s senior author, led the research. The study appeared in Physical Review Letters. Thomas Myers is the paper’s first author and a doctoral student in Gerald Gabrielse’s laboratory at Northwestern University. Phys.org identifies Myers as the first author of the Physical Review Letters study and notes that he works in Gabrielse’s lab.
