The role intends to strengthen collaboration with Indigenous communities, especially those near the NSF Very Large Array, a radio telescope, and the planned Next Generation VLA, a future radio telescope array, as well as across all observatory settings. Danielle Rowland will work with NSF NRAO departments to create and carry out outreach strategies that improve relationships with Native communities, increase cultural sensitivity, and support community‑led initiatives within the observatory.

She is a member of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation from Western New York State and holds an astrophysics degree from Columbia University. Her background includes service as a co‑investigator on the VA‑NC LSAMP alliance, leadership of broadening participation for Cosmic AI, management of ODI student programs, and participation in the National Astronomy Consortium.

Throughout her academic career she has facilitated links among Indigenous scholars by giving talks, attending community events and organizing outreach. At the International Astronomical Union she presented a talk titled “Diversifying STEM: Collaborative Initiatives at NRAO” that highlights her impact on student achievement in STEM.
