The seatback streaming integration was announced on Nov. 5, 2026 by United Airlines and Spotify for Starlink-equipped aircraft. To start, a passenger connects a phone to the aircraft’s inflight Wi-Fi, scans the QR code shown on the seatback, and logs in; customers who are already signed in see their profile load automatically. The stream is free, with no inflight internet pass or MileagePlus sign-in required, so passengers do not have to buy Wi-Fi to use the seatback app. Spotify said connecting for Spotify is free. Once signed in, listeners reach Spotify’s full catalog, including more than 100 million tracks, plus millions of podcasts and playlists, along with videos and albums, with personalized recommendations. Listeners with Spotify Free or Spotify Premium accounts can use the app, but playback options and features vary by plan and market, and passengers can resume playback after landing or save new favorites for later. Audio keeps playing as passengers look at other seatback features such as the flight map, with a small on-screen player handling controls, and the screen also carries video podcasts and music videos. Spotify login credentials are never typed on the seatback display; authentication happens through the passenger’s phone, and the system logs the customer out automatically at the end of the flight, though an early logout is also available. Spotify said the screen resets before the next passengers board, a safeguard for personal accounts on shared equipment. Cite list: Open Jaw Network Ltd., Jetsetter Guide
Testing of Starlink on United flights started at the beginning of 2025, and the airline now says nearly half of its daily flights offer the service. The airline counts more than 181,000 seatback screens across its mainline fleet, a share of about 85%, more than any major U.S. carrier, and expects more than 219,000 by the close of 2027. The carrier plans to finish Starlink installations across the full fleet by the end of 2027 as part of a wider investment that also covers over 2,500 hours of premium entertainment, including programming from Apple TV, HBO Max, A24 and Peacock. The curated Spotify channel on seatback screens dates to June 2025, when United introduced more than 450 hours of programming including audiobooks, video podcasts and playlists. Since that launch, 2.3 million customers have logged more than 1.9 million hours on that channel. The curated channel remains available across the fleet for free, separate from the new personal-account streaming option. Cite list: Open Jaw Network Ltd., Jetsetter Guide, MarketScreener
Several foreign carriers are also installing Starlink, including American, Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways. Delta is working with Amazon’s low-Earth-orbit project, and JetBlue remains with Viasat-powered Fly-Fi. United’s vice president for digital said Starlink’s status as a differentiator is only a moment in time because fast Wi-Fi is coming for every airline. Cite list: BigGo Finance

Independent testing cited by the airline found that Starlink beats most providers, in part because its low-Earth-orbit constellation now totals more than 11,000 satellites and cuts latency versus geostationary satellites. The airline picked Starlink for global coverage that reaches polar regions on some transatlantic and transpacific routes, and it says bandwidth, coverage and reliability allow streaming through seatbacks without interruption. Spotify’s personal-account feature on seatbacks is now available on Starlink-equipped aircraft and will keep expanding through 2027. One report points to half the fleet by spring 2027 as an interim goal. Jetsetter Guide calls that a rollout goal rather than current status, and the companies have not said how many aircraft carry the app or when the feature will cover the full fleet. United plans to add more third-party streaming apps modeled on the Spotify deal, said Mark Muren, the airline’s managing director for product marketing. Cite list: BigGo Finance, Jetsetter Guide
Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, said personalization should not end when customers board, and that Starlink lets passengers play their own Spotify content on the seatback screens. Ian Geller, Spotify’s vice president of business development, called the milestone major, saying it brings recommendations, saved libraries, songs, podcasts, audiobooks and videos to the screen at 35,000 feet. Grant Milstead, United’s vice president for digital, put it plainly: “Without Starlink, we couldn’t generate that living-room-in-the-sky experience.” Cite list: Open Jaw Network Ltd., BigGo Finance
The airline calls itself the first carrier to give customers access to a personal Spotify account on the seatback screen. Sources say that claim is narrower than being first to offer music streaming in flight, pointing out that American Airlines already streams music through seatback screens or passengers’ own devices. Seatback personalization helps United set apart its premium cabin and long-haul product even as satellite Wi-Fi becomes standard, while for Spotify the cabin puts its service in front of captive listeners where rival apps are not present.
