OHB System AG won a €554 million contract from the European Space Agency on Nov. 4, 2026. The company announced the award on that date, identifying itself as the Bremen-based prime contractor. The agreement covers development of the first Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography satellite for the European Union’s Copernicus programme.
The company leads the European industrial consortium as prime contractor. Under the agreement, OHB System AG will develop a single spacecraft and holds an option for the development and manufacture of a second identical satellite. In its Nov. 4 announcement, OHB identified itself as leading a European industrial consortium under Europe’s Earth observation programme. The contract award makes OHB the leader of the industrial team responsible for the new topography mission under the EU’s Copernicus programme.
Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography will carry radar altimeters, instruments that measure surface height by bouncing radar signals downward, to survey oceans, coastlines, ice sheets and inland waters from a sun-synchronous orbit, an orbit that keeps a constant angle to the sun. Optical instruments move to a separate dedicated mission, Sentinel-3 Next Generation Optical. The mission concentrates on radar altimetry while the optical instruments fly on their own spacecraft. This division means the topography satellites focus on radar-altimetry measurements while a dedicated optical mission handles surface observations.
The two current Sentinel-3 satellites are in operation, each carrying a radar altimeter and spectrometer, a device that measures properties of light. They monitor ocean and ice surface topography along with ocean and land colour and surface temperature. Each spacecraft integrates all required instruments, and the two satellites are identical in their instrument fit.
For the next generation, the optical mission and the topography mission divide capabilities. The optical mission observes Earth’s surface at visible and infrared wavelengths, bands of light that include what the human eye can see and longer wavelengths beyond red, and measures surface temperatures. The topography mission focuses on radar-altimetry measurements. Splitting the instrument suite across separate missions aims to deliver enhanced performance, with optical instruments on a dedicated mission and radar altimetry on the topography satellites.
Ann-Theres Schulz, OHB’s project manager, said on Nov. 4, 2026, that the mission will deliver more accurate height measurements, broader coverage, and faster revisit times. She described it as combining continuity with a significant technological leap forward in the company’s November 4 announcement. Operating in a sun-synchronous orbit, the two Sentinel-3 NGT satellites will offer broader coverage, faster revisit cycles, and more accurate sea-level height readings than today’s Sentinel-3 satellites. The changes are intended to maintain continuous observations while improving measurement quality.
On Nov. 4, 2026, ESA Sentinel-3 NG topography project manager Miguel Such Taboada called the contract signature a major milestone for the future of Copernicus altimetry observations. He said S3-NGT builds on the heritage of Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 and will ensure continuity while enhancing capability to observe oceans, inland waters and ice. His remarks tied the new mission to the established lineage of European altimetry missions.
“We are proud that ESA has entrusted us with the development of the next generation of Sentinel-3 topography satellites,” said Marco Fuchs.
A July 2026 overview published by the International Laser Ranging Service tentatively scheduled Sentinel-3 NGT satellite launches for 2033 and 2035. OHB did not provide an updated launch schedule in its November 4 announcement.
OHB secured preliminary design study contracts for Sentinel-3 NGT in 2022 and Sentinel-3 NGO in 2024. The company had won its own study contracts for both missions, covering the topography and optical missions respectively.
ESA awarded parallel study contracts to Airbus Defence and Space for Sentinel-3 NGT and Thales Alenia Space for Sentinel-3 NGO. OHB appears to have won selection over Airbus to move forward with detailed design, development, manufacture and qualification of the first Sentinel-3 NGT satellite. A corresponding contract for Sentinel-3 Next Generation Optical has yet to be announced.
OHB shares rose 4.3% on Nov. 4, 2026, following the contract announcement. OHB scheduled publication of its nine-month 2026 results for Nov. 12, 2026. The company planned the results release alongside the contract announcement and analyst coverage.
Jefferies analyst Chloe Lemarie maintained a Buy rating and a EUR 280 price target on OHB on Oct. 29, 2026. She kept the rating ahead of the company’s third-quarter figures, expecting positive first-half business trends to carry through supported by solid margin development.
Copernicus functions as the European Union’s programme for Earth observation. It supplies continuous information about the condition of Earth, its atmosphere, and its oceans. Sentinel-3 NGT will ensure continuity of Copernicus altimetry observations while delivering enhanced capability to observe oceans, inland waters and ice. The observations support long-term monitoring of the planet’s seas and frozen surfaces.
